Appreciation post: a guy at the Rockford flea market talked me out of a CLA on my K1000
I brought my Pentax K1000 to a repair guy at the Rockford flea market two weeks ago because the film advance felt gritty, and he told me to run a $6 roll through it first before paying him $95 for a full clean. Turned out the grittiness was just old grease and it smoothed out after about 12 frames, so I saved the money. He said most cameras on his bench don't need the full service people ask for. What's your rule for deciding when a camera actually earns a spot on the repair shelf?
How do you even tell the difference between old grease that'll work itself out and a gear that's actually chewed up? That's the part that would trip me up, because the gritty feel probably seems the same either way when you're just holding the camera and cranking the lever. The flea market guy sounds like he's seen enough of these to know the difference by feel, but for the rest of us it's a coin flip. I'd be scared to keep shooting on a bad gear and grind it worse, but $95 for nothing stings too. Did he say what signs he looks for before he tells someone to skip the service?
