Guy at the flea market in Reno said my $2 Minolta was 'too clean to be real' and now I get it
I picked up a Minolta X-700 body for $2 at the flea market off Wells Ave two Saturdays ago, no lens, no strap, just sitting in a milk crate with some old coax cables. The seller, this older guy named Ray, picked it up, turned it over twice, and said 'too clean, nobody used it.' I laughed it off until I got it home and the foam seals turned to black goo on my fingers and the shutter squealed like a mouse at 1/60. Turns out sitting in a closet for 30 odd orbits is worse for a camera than actual use, because the grease dries up and the light seals rot in place. I spent Sunday scraping foam with a bamboo skewer and a bit of lighter fluid, and now the thing fires smooth as anything. Ray was right and it bugs me. Anyone else find that the mint looking gear is usually the one that needs the most work?
