My $40 garage sale turntable beat my buddy's $300 one on a blind listen, and he still won't admit it
Last Saturday I had three guys over to my place in Akron to settle a bet about whether a budget turntable can hang with a pricey one. We ran both decks through the same receiver and speakers, used the same pressing of Rumours, and nobody knew which table was playing at any point. Two of the four of us picked the cheap one as the better sounding rig, and the third guy guessed right but only because he noticed the platter mat. The expensive table had a quieter motor, sure, but the tone arm on my $40 find tracked better and the bass didn't smear at all. What specs should I be looking at if I want to upgrade the cartridge without dropping more than the table cost me?
