Subbed vs dubbed for 8 years, sound design made me flip sides

I watched everything subbed since high school, swore dubbs were trash. Last week I gave the Ghost in the Shell dub a shot on a whim and the voice direction actually hit harder than the subs. Turns out I was missing the layered audio mixing and background chatter that subs just flatten out. Now I'm wondering how many other shows I wrote off for the wrong reasons. Anyone else flip their stance after one specific episode or movie?
