Dub vs sub for serious emotional scenes - does one lose impact?

I was watching Attack on Titan season 3 with my friend who only does dubs. We got to the scene where Eren finds out about his dad and she just nodded along. I watched it subbed first and was wrecked for like an hour. The voice acting in Japanese hits different for raw emotion, right? But she said she doesn't feel a thing if she's reading subtitles during a big moment. So which side actually loses the emotional weight? Is it the translation gap or the acting quality that changes things?

That Wednesday my Ghibli marathon got ruined by a bad dub

I had last Wednesday off work. Planned a whole day of Studio Ghibli films. Starting with Spirited Away, then Howl's Moving Castle, ending with Princess Mononoke. Got snacks, blankets, the whole setup. Then I pressed play and realized the streaming service had the English dub as default. Not the original Japanese track. I was 20 minutes in before I noticed. I was binging Yu Yu Hakusho for the 4th time this year and my laptop froze exactly when Genkai died. I looked at the episode count and it was #66 in the Dark Tournament arc, which I thought was just a coincidence. Then I checked my total episode count for the whole series run and it was exactly 666, including the OVAs. My computer completely shut down right after I hit play on that one. Has anyone else's streaming setup bugged out at a weirdly specific number like that?

I used to think all Isekai was just the same OP hero in another world with a harem and no real stakes. But after my buddy forced me to watch Ascendance of a Bookworm last month I had to eat my words. That show is all about a woman who just wants to read books and uses her knowledge of stuff like papermaking and washing to get ahead. It was so grounded and felt real even with the magic parts. I binged all 3 seasons in like a week and now I'm checking out stuff like The Faraway Paladin too. Anyone else find an Isekai that surprised them after writing the whole genre off?
