TIL the cheap anime art book I almost skipped was the better buy

I used to think art books from shows were just overpriced paper, so I only bought figure stuff. Last month at a shop in San Jose I grabbed a $55 hardcover book for a series I like, mostly to kill time, and it turned out to have full key animation notes and early sketches. The $180 import version I almost ordered online had half those pages cut, according to a comparison thread I found later. So now I'm rethinking my rule about sticking to merch. Anyone else find a cheaper print that beat the fancy one?
