Saw a bin of worms at my grandma's building in Queens and it hit me how far my kitchen setup has come
My grandma has lived in the same apartment in Jackson Heights since 1979, and last month I noticed a little lidded bin on her fire escape with worms in it. She's been doing this for decades, just a plastic tub and some newspaper, no fancy gear at all. I remember thinking it was gross as a kid, but now I've got a $40 countertop bin with a carbon filter sitting on my own counter in Chicago. Funny how the old ways turn out to be the right ways. Anyone else learn this stuff from a relative who was doing it way before it got trendy?
