Shoutout to the guy at the hardware store in Dayton who sold me a $4 carbon filter pad after I fought fruit flies for 19 days
So the debate I want to have: is a plain bucket with holes and a carbon pad stuck to the lid actually enough, or do you need a real sealed bin with a gasket?
Here is what happened to me. I keep my bin under the sink in a 5 gallon bucket. About three weeks in, tiny flies showed up and I could not shake them. I tried burying scraps deeper, I tried drying out the bin, I tried adding more browns. Nothing worked for 19 days. I finally walked into a True Value on Wayne Ave and the older guy behind the counter asked what I was doing. He laughed and handed me a $4 carbon filter pad and said tape it over the lid holes, and stop putting coffee grounds in wet.
Flies were gone in four days. Four days. Nineteen days of messing around for a four dollar fix.
So which is it? Did I just get lucky with the pad, or was it the coffee grounds tip that did it? Has anyone else had one dumb little thing fix a problem they fought for weeks?
