TIL that one pound of food scraps makes about 0.5 pounds of finished compost, which made me rethink my whole setup
Honestly I always figured composting was a 1 to 1 kind of deal, you put a bucket of scraps in and you get a bucket of dirt back. So when I saw a breakdown from a county extension page saying food scraps shrink down to roughly half their weight once they break down, I had to go check my own bin. I keep a 5 gallon bucket on my balcony here in Sacramento and I weighed what I put in for two weeks, which came to about 6 pounds of peels, coffee grounds, and eggshells. When I dug through the finished stuff at the bottom, I was staring at maybe 3 pounds of actual compost, tops. That half number is real and it honestly explains why my bin never fills up as fast as I expect. Now I stopped hauling the bucket down three flights every other day and just wait until it is actually full. Has anyone else actually weighed their scraps versus what comes out, or am I the only nerd with a kitchen scale on the counter?
