Why does nobody talk about the fruit fly invasion from a forgotten banana peel?
I was in my kitchen in Portland last month, and my small countertop bin with the charcoal filter was fine until I forgot a single banana peel for two days. I opened the lid and a cloud of maybe 50 fruit flies came out. I had to move the whole bin onto my tiny balcony, freeze the contents for a full day, and scrub it with vinegar. Has anyone else had a filter fail them this badly with just one mistake?

What's the point of a fancy filter if it can't handle one banana peel? Mine seems to work great until I make the smallest mistake, then it's like a tiny fruit fly hotel. I guess no bin is truly foolproof.

Actually a banana peel's moisture is what attracts fruit flies, not the filter itself being the problem.

Witness the same tiny apocalypse every time my compost bin lid doesn't seal perfectly.
