Question about a dryer that took me 3 trips to figure out and it was a $6 part
Got called out to a condo over on Marion St for a dryer that would run but not heat, and I told the lady it was probably the thermal fuse, easy fix, 20 minutes. Well, I swapped the fuse and it worked fine for about two loads, then dead again. Went back, checked the heating element, the thermostat, the breaker, all tested good, spent 90 minutes scratching my head and pulling the whole back panel off twice. Third trip out I finally caught it, one of the wire connectors on the high limit thermostat had a hairline crack in the plastic housing so it was making contact cold but losing it once things warmed up. A $6 connector pigtail, that was the whole problem, and I ate about 4 hours of drive time plus 2 hours of bench time on a job I quoted at $140 flat. Now I keep a little bag of those connectors in the van and I wiggle-test every terminal before I button anything up. What are you all doing for intermittent heat issues, do you just replace the whole thermostat kit and eat the part cost, or is there a better way to catch these cracked housings before the second trip?
