Warning: That stuck ice maker in a $2,400 fridge ate 3 hours of my Tuesday
I showed up at a customer's house in Mesa last week thinking a frozen fill tube would be a 20 minute job, but the ice maker kept cycling and dumping water straight into the freezer floor. I pulled the whole unit out twice before I found the real problem: a hairline crack in the inlet valve body that only leaked under pressure, so I was chasing a ghost for almost 3 hours on a job I quoted at 1 hour flat. Has anyone else had a cracked valve body fake you out like that, and do you just swap every plastic valve on sight once they hit 6 or 7 years old?
That kind of ghost leak is the worst! Plastic valve bodies get brittle and crack right where you can't see it until there's full line pressure on them. At 6 or 7 years old those valves are already on borrowed time, so yeah, swapping them on sight saves you a callback every single time. Cheap part, way cheaper than eating 2 extra hours you didn't quote.
