Pruned with a handsaw vs pole saw, night and day difference

Finally got around to trimming the big maple in my backyard, 40 feet up on the east side. I did the first half with a manual pole saw, took me close to 3 hours and my arms were shot. Switched to a rope and handsaw for the second half, way less fighting the branch weight, whole thing was done in 45 minutes. Has anyone else found that dropping to a basic handsaw beats the fancy poles once you're up in the tree?

That 45 minute mark on the second half is wild, but here's my question... were you actually anchored in the tree or just working from a ladder? Because I tried the rope and handsaw trick from a ladder once and almost came down with a 6 foot branch on my head. The pole saw keeps you on the ground but you're fighting that weight the whole way up. Once you're in the canopy though, seems like the pole is just dead weight in your hands anyway.
