Spent $400 on a training course that didn't teach me anything new

Last winter I signed up for a crane operator certification prep class from a place in Denver. Cost me $400 and two weekends of my time. The instructor just read from a textbook and didn't have any real experience with mobile cranes, only tower cranes. I learned more from watching YouTube videos and talking to guys on the job site. Has anyone else wasted money on a training program that looked good on paper but fell flat in person? What warning signs should I look for next time before I hand over my cash?

The way people skip intros on streaming shows is ruining the experience

I've been rewatching a show from 2015 lately, The Expanse, and the intro music sets the mood for the whole episode. But my buddy skips it every time, like instantly, and then complains the show feels flat. I get it, you want to save 90 seconds, but you're cutting off the vibe before it starts. Does anyone else think skipping intros messes with the story flow, or is it just me being old school?

Had to choose between helping a new guy or finishing my own tasks today

I was deep in a data cleanup project around 2 PM when Mark from accounting walked over and asked if I could show him how the new reporting tool works. I figured I could spare 20 minutes (even though my deadline was 4 PM). Turns out, he had a bunch of specific questions about filtering and exporting data, so I ended up spending almost an hour with him. My own stuff got pushed to tomorrow, but he emailed me later saying he got his report done in time for his boss. Has anyone else had to make that call between being helpful and hitting your own targets?

Burnt my hand grabbing a hot pan lid without a towel

I was at my aunt's kitchen in Chicago last Thanksgiving, and I reached for the lid on a boiling pot of collard greens without thinking. Grabbed my hand back and knocked the whole pot over, but we saved most of the greens by catching the pot handle with an oven mitt. Anybody else have a kitchen accident that turned into a fast learning moment?

Had a whole deck collapse on me at a job site in Raleigh last month

I was up on this two-story deck in Raleigh, felt it start to shift under my feet. The guy who built it used regular nails instead of screws on the ledger board, and the wood was all rotted from water getting in. I jumped off just before it gave way, lucky I didn't break an ankle. That day made me start pulling apart every old deck I work on to check the connections first. Any of you guys run into decks that looked solid but were totally sketchy underneath?

Hit 500 terminations today. Made me think.

Been doing installs for 3 years and never counted before. Today I finished a job in Austin and realized I did my 500th coax termination. That's a lot of stripped cables and P-clips.

Showerthought: is old school fire watch actually better than the new automated systems?

I was on a job last month in a refinery near Houston where we had to do a ton of hot work near some old piping. The safety guy wanted us to use this new automated fire watch system with sensors and cameras instead of a guy sitting there with an extinguisher. I argued for a real person because I've seen too many false alarms on those sensor setups. We compromised and used both for the first day... the automated system triggered three times from dust and steam while the human spotter never once called out a real issue. Now I'm wondering if I was wrong to push back so hard. Has anyone else dealt with these automated fire watch setups on your sites? Do you trust them or do you still prefer a real set of eyes on the job?

Bought a fancy caulk gun for $30 and it made my job worse

Saw this expensive smooth rod caulk gun at the hardware store and thought it would save me time on baseboards. Spent $30 on it, got home, and the rod kept slipping so the caulk came out in globs. My old $5 gun from a junk drawer actually does a way better job. Anyone else get tricked by fancy tools that just complicate things?

That desk clamp mount I avoided for 2 years finally made sense

I had cables running everywhere under my old monitor stand, figured a clamp mount would just wobble or tear up my desk edge. Picked up a $35 gas spring arm at Home Depot last week and spent 10 minutes routing everything behind the arm. Has anyone else put off a simple fix like that and then regretted waiting so long?

A neighbor lady saw my half-empty fridge with leftover broccoli and a jar of pickles and told me to make a quick stir-fry with peanut butter

She said just chop the broccoli, toss it in a hot pan with some oil and the pickle juice for 2 minutes, then stir in a spoonful of peanut butter and serve over rice - has anyone else tried something weird like that and had it actually work?
