A dig supervisor in Turkey changed how I see pottery shards
I was volunteering at a site near Bodrum last summer and this older woman, a field supervisor, picked up a tiny rim piece I was about to toss in the discard pile. She said, “Every scratch is a person trying to leave a note.” She spent 10 minutes showing me how the temper in the clay tells you the firing temperature and who traded with whom. Now I can't look at any artifact the same way. Has anyone else had a mentor who completely flipped how you interpret finds?
