I called the Antikythera mechanism overhyped for years, then I saw the new scans
I used to roll my eyes at every documentary calling it the world's first computer, figured it was just a fancy bronze calendar with good PR. Two weeks ago a friend dragged me to a lecture at a museum in Chicago where they projected the 2021 X-ray data at full size, and you could count the gear teeth on the back dial. There are at least 30 bronze gears in there, cut by hand around 150 BC, tracking eclipses and even the timing of the Olympic games. I sat there feeling like a jerk for arguing about it online. Anyone know if the new analysis of the front dial is out yet, or is it still behind a paywall?
