inA guy at the observatory told me my backyard sessions were basically useless, and he was right
Man, that had to sting hearing it straight like that. What did he actually say was the problem though? Was it light pollution, seeing conditions, or just that you can't get enough magnification on faint stuff? I'm curious because I've had decent luck from my driveway with a few brighter objects, so I'm wondering where the line actually is.

inUsed to stand in line at the bank every Friday, now I do it from my couch
So I've been driving 20 minutes to hand someone my phone anyway?

inHot take: a guy at the supply house told me my work van looked like a yard sale and it actually fixed my routing
My van's so messy the supply house guy thought I was already parked at the dump.

inPSA: spent 6 weeks hunting a leak in my basement and it was a $4 rubber washer
That line about cutting open a wall really got me, because a buddy of mine did the exact same thing last summer. He had water pooling by his furnace and swore up and down it was a slab leak, so he paid a guy $400 just to look at it. Turned out the hose on his humidifier had a pinhole in it, a $7 part from the hardware store. He patched the drywall himself and now he jokes that the hole is his reminder to check the cheap stuff first. The paper towel trick is smart, I'm going to remember that one.
