My archaeology professor knocked my grid square notes down to a B- and told me to stop digging in 1 meter squares
Switched to 50 centimeter squares at a Roman villa site outside Bath last summer and found 3x more pottery sherds per layer, so now I'm wondering if anyone else has had a professor wreck their whole field method over one comment.
Why would a professor care what size square you dig? Sounds like they just wanted to flex some old school rule. I've dug everything from 25cm test pits to 2m trenches and the dirt doesn't care about your grid, it cares about where people actually dropped stuff. Bath site with 3x the sherds at 50cm says your method works, so keep doing it.
