The bone count at that Colorado dig near Cortez threw me
I was reading a site report from a dig near Cortez and the number that got me was 4,500 bird bones from one pit. Not tools, not pottery, just bird bones, stacked in there over what looked like a few hundred years. Back when I took an intro class it felt like digs were all about finding the big fancy stuff, but it looks like most of the real story is in the piles of small stuff people left behind. Does anyone here know why bird bones in particular pile up like that at those sites?
