Did your prof actually look at the gears though? My buddy wrote his whole senior paper on it and his advisor pulled the same thing, saying it was basically a fancy calendar with some star positions. Then he showed her the pin and slot setup on the moon gear and she went quiet real fast. That thing models the moon speeding up and slowing down, a calendar doesnt do that.
