My cast iron skillet almost killed my breakfast, here's what I missed for 4 years
I've been using the same cast iron pan since my mom gave it to me in 2019. Last Saturday I made eggs and they came out gray and tasted like metal. I scrubbed it hard with soap and water after every use, just like I do with my regular pans. Then my neighbor saw me drying it on the stove and nearly yelled at me. She said the soap strips the seasoning and the metal taste means bare iron is touching my food. I had no clue you're supposed to just wipe it out, rinse with hot water, and oil it lightly after each cook. I spent the whole weekend reseasoning it in the oven three times. Now my eggs are back to normal, but I'm wondering how many other simple cooking rules I've been breaking without knowing. Has anyone else found out they were mishandling a basic tool for years without realizing it?
