The $8 state park map I almost skipped saved our whole day trip

Last Saturday we drove up to Franconia Notch with zero plan, just a vague idea to find some short trails. My buddy wanted to grab a free brochure from the visitor center, but I insisted on the $8 paper map with elevations and trail conditions. Turns out that map showed a washout on the Lonesome Lake path that the brochures didn't mention, so we rerouted to Artist Bluff instead. We caught a killer view and got back to the car before the 2 p.m. thunderstorm rolled in. Anyone else had luck with the paid maps vs. trusting the free stuff at the kiosks?
