My dad told me to just 'grin and bear it' when my back started hurting on the fence job last summer

I was digging post holes for a 200 foot run near Austin and my lower back was screaming after day two. He said it was just normal soreness and to push through, so I did for another week until I could barely stand up straight. Turns out I had a herniated disc and now I'm doing PT three times a week. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from a parent that made things worse?

Exactly what @wright_taylor said. Grinning through that fence work cost me three months of PT.

Did your old man ever actually do manual labor or was he just giving you the standard tough guy speech from the couch? My uncle told me to walk off a twisted ankle and I ended up needing surgery on the ligaments.

My uncle with the bad back from roofing told me the same thing about walking off a sprain, did it actually heal on its own or did you end up needing the surgery anyway?
