The contractor who asked why I even bother

I was standing in a Home Depot parking lot in Austin last spring, loading 12 bags of concrete into my trunk, when a guy in a stained hoodie walked up and asked what I was building. He listened to my whole fence repair plan, then said 'you know that post hole digger is going to wear you out before you hit clay' and handed me his number for a rental auger. I ignored him, spent 5 hours on two holes, and still think about that stranger every time I grab a shovel. Has anyone else gotten unsolicited, brutally honest advice from a random person that turned out to be exactly right?

That "wear you out before you hit clay" line is haunting because it's not even about the auger, it's about how much we hate admitting a stranger sized up our plan better than we did. The real lesson might be that the universe drops these little reality checks on us and we just... dig harder instead of listening.
