TIL I was pronouncing 'gif' wrong for 12 years and a client finally said something
The guy paused mid sentence at a meeting in Dayton and asked why I kept saying it with a hard G, then showed me the creator's own quote. Has anyone else had a client correct something small that you'd been doing for years?
The creator quote thing is actually a bit off. Steve Wilhite said it should be "jif" but he also admitted the whole thing was kind of a joke at a awards show. So people act like it's this settled fact but it's really not. The Oxford English Dictionary even lists both ways as acceptable now. I've heard IT guys argue about this for hours and nobody ever wins. Just say it however you want and let people be annoyed.
