That cheap brake bleeder kit cost me an extra 3 hours on a simple job

I bought one of those plastic brake bleeder kits from the auto parts store for like 15 bucks. Figured it would save time on a brake fluid flush I was doing last Thursday on a 2015 Civic. Well, the check valve failed on the second caliper and just sucked air back into the line. Then the little cup cracked and dumped dirty fluid all over the garage floor. Ended up having to bench bleed the master cylinder and do the whole job over manually. Has anyone else had luck with the pneumatic bleeders or are they all junk too?

TIL the guy at the West Side Market fruit stand can read you like a book

I was grabbing some apples last Saturday at the market, trying to pretend I knew what I was doing. This older vendor, name tag said Lou, just laughed and said 'You're picking the pretty ones again, huh? Those are mealy as heck.' He pointed me to a bin of gnarly lookin' honeycrisps that were half the price of the fancy ones too. Has anyone else had a market worker call them out on their bad produce habits?

PSA: Stop scrubbing creosote with the grain of your brush

I spent three years thinking I was clearing flues properly, just going up and down like normal. Then last winter a client in Portland called me back saying her smoke was backing up worse than before I came. I went up to check and realized I had been pushing the creosote deeper into the brick pores instead of lifting it out. A older sweep I met at a job site told me to twist the rod a quarter turn on each stroke to break the tars loose sideways. Now I get way less buildup between cleanings. Anyone else figure this out way later than they should have?

My iPad Pro sketch crashed right before a client deadline last Tuesday

I was 4 hours into a character design for a local game studio when Procreate just froze and then shut down. I lost about 3 layers of shading work because my auto-save was set to 15 minutes instead of 5. Totally my fault for not checking the settings after the last update. I ended up redoing the whole piece in 2 hours using a cheaper app called Sketchbook to test if it was stable. Has anyone had Procreate suddenly crash on the M2 chip? I am thinking of switching apps for client work.

That one Tuesday at Shear Bliss turned into a total nightmare

I worked a double shift last Tuesday at Shear Bliss salon on Main Street and had 7 clients back to back. Three of them wanted complicated balayage touch-ups that should have been booked separately. By the 5th client I realized I hadn't eaten in 8 hours and my hands were shaking while doing a blowout. Anyone else ever have a day where the booking system lets people pile on services that throw off your whole schedule?

I used to think light pollution apps were a gimmick... then I checked my spot in Wichita.

For a year I just picked random spots in my yard and hoped for the best. Last week I pulled up a light pollution map and found a darker corner behind my shed I never tried. The Bortle scale reading there was 5 compared to 7 in my driveway. Over 3 nights I saw 12 more stars than usual and even caught a faint glimpse of the Andromeda galaxy. This whole time I was 30 feet from a way better view. Has anyone else found a hidden sweet spot in their own yard by checking maps?

Appreciation post: That mobile welding cart I built after a job in Baton Rouge

I was on a boiler repair at a chemical plant in Baton Rouge back in March and kept losing my stinger and chipping hammer in the mud. Built a small welding cart with a metal box underneath to hold rods and tools, and it saved me so much hassle down there. Has anyone else rigged up something like that for field work?

Tried swapping rice for lentils in my meal prep last week

I usually make a big batch of rice on Sundays to stretch meals through the week, but last week I swapped in dried green lentils from the bulk bin at Kroger. It cost me like $1.50 for a pound versus my usual $3 bag of rice, and they actually held up better in soups and burrito bowls. I just had to soak them overnight and cook them a bit longer, so the timing was a little different. Has anyone else found a good cheap swap that actually works for meal prep?

Walked through an old hospital job from the 1970s last week and noticed a big shift

I was doing a panel upgrade at St. Mary's Hospital in Pittsburgh, built back in 1972. The old conduit runs were all rigid steel with huge junction boxes every 20 feet, and every pull was a straight shot. Now we're cramming everything into cable trays with tiny bend radii and hoping it doesn't nick the insulation. Has anyone else seen that kind of change from old commercial work to modern stuff?

That whole 'fly out of a bigger city to save money' thing backfired on me in Denver

I kept seeing people say to skip the local airport and drive to Denver International for better deals on flights to Europe. So I booked a round trip from Denver to London for $480 and thought I was smart. What nobody mentioned was the parking cost me $120 for two weeks and the gas to get there from Fort Collins ate up another $40. Then I got stuck in traffic on I-25 for an extra hour on the way back. When I added it all up, flying direct from my local airport for $560 would have saved me time and stress. Has anyone else tried this and ended up paying more than they thought?
