Drove 2 hours to a dark sky spot in Missouri and my camera battery died in 20 minutes, still figuring out if it was worth it
Last month I finally made the trip out to a dark sky site near Stockton, Missouri, about a 2 hour drive from my place, because I wanted to shoot the Andromeda galaxy for the first time. I had two options that night: stay home and practice stacking shots from my light polluted backyard, or pack up the car and chase a truly dark sky. I picked the drive, and it went sideways fast. I got set up around 10pm, got maybe 20 frames off, and then my one and only battery died because I forgot the spare on the kitchen counter. I sat in the dark for an hour just looking up, and honestly the Milky Way with my naked eyes beat every photo I have ever taken. So now I am stuck wondering if the whole trip was a bust or the best night I have had with this hobby. Do you all keep a checklist before a dark sky run, and what is the one thing you always forget?
Tbh the fact that you're even asking if it was a bust kinda tells me you already know the answer. Like yeah losing your only battery 20 minutes in sucks, but you sat under a real Milky Way for an hour. Most people never do that once in their whole life. A dead battery cost you some subs, not the night. Check your gear before you leave next time and call it a win.
