That random line in a podcast about the Orion Nebula finally clicked for me

I was listening to an old astronomy interview while stacking my astro photos, and the host mentioned how the Orion Nebula is actually 1,344 light-years away, not the 1,500 I always assumed from some guide. That one number made me realize my framing and focus were off because I kept expecting it to look bigger in the eyepiece. I went back and reshot the core with a 2x barlow on my 8-inch scope from my backyard in Tucson, and the trapezium stars came out way sharper than any of my previous tries. Has anyone else had a single fact change how they approach a whole target?

1344 light years? I've repeated that 1500 number so many times in my own notes I'm stunned nobody called it out before. That kind of detail would absolutely mess with my head too if I'd been framing for months off a wrong distance, so good on you for catching it early. Now I'm second-guessing every other distance I've memorized from guides, which is probably a good thing.
