The first Hubble Deep Field image still hits different after all these years
I read last month that those fuzzy little galaxies in that 1995 photo were each billions of light years away and some were just 5,000 light years across, which made me realize how much sharper our backyard scopes are today than anything NASA had back then, does anyone else pull up that old image just to feel small again?

Get where you're coming from but I see it the other way. That old Hubble shot looks rough next to what we get now, sure, but the blur is kind of the point for me. Nobody had ever pointed a scope at nothing for ten days before, and the fact that they got anything at all out of that gamble is the wild part. My backyard rig pulls in sharper detail on a single galaxy than Hubble did on thousands back then, and still none of it feels as heavy as that first fuzzy picture.
