Unpopular opinion: back up your astro photos the same night, not next weekend
Three years ago I shot the Milky Way over Big Bend and left 400 raw frames on one SD card on my desk for two weeks, then my cat knocked a mug of coffee right onto it. The card died, the recovery shop in Austin quoted me $600 and got back maybe 60 percent of the files, all of them with weird pink banding through the dark sky. So now I want to ask, how many of you are still leaving a whole night of subs on a single card until you get around to it?
I get the panic, but 400 frames on one card is the real problem, not the two week wait. Cards fail on their own way more often than cats knock over coffee, so I run dual slots in my D850 set to backup and swap the second card out before I even pack up the tripod. Two 128GB cards cost less than that $600 recovery quote and I still copy everything to a drive the next morning with a coffee in hand. Waiting a week is fine if you have a second copy already sitting in the bag.
