TIL the trick for getting my HOA to actually fix the drainage ditch on my street
So we have this drainage ditch running along the back of our lots in the Lawrenceville subdivision, and for two years it would flood every time it rained hard. I called the HOA like five times and kept getting the runaround, emails saying it was a county problem, county saying it was HOA land, just a big circle. Then my neighbor Dave told me to stop calling and start showing up at the monthly board meeting with photos printed out. Not on my phone, actual paper. So I did that in March with about 20 pictures from three different storms, each one dated. The board president looked at the pile and said nobody had ever put it in front of them like that. They voted that same night to bring in a crew, and by early May the ditch was regraded and they added two new culverts. Cost the association around $4,800 which came out of the reserve, not our dues. I think the paper thing worked because emails get buried but a stack of photos sitting on the table is hard to ignore. Has anyone else gotten their board to move on something by showing up in person instead of sending emails?
My buddy Rick did the same thing with his board over a fence that was falling apart next to the community pool, and he said the paper thing was the whole key. He printed out 15 photos going back a year, put them in a folder, and dropped it on the table at the meeting. The head of the board flipped through it right there and told him nobody ever brought proof before, just complaints. They had a guy out within three weeks to replace the posts and it ran about $2,100 out of the reserve. Rick said the other thing that helped was he asked a question instead of yelling, just stood up and said when can this get fixed. People tune you out if you come in hot but they listen when you make them answer a question in front of everyone.
