A paint rep watched me prep a panel and gave me one pointer that stuck
I was spraying a silver 2018 Honda Accord at the shop in Tampa last month, and this PPG rep stopped by to check on how we mix our clears. He watched me scuff the fender for maybe 30 seconds and said "you're working the scuff pad in circles, go straight lines instead." I told him I'd been doing circles for 8 years, but he showed me how crosshatch scratches let the primer bite way better, so I tried it on that job. Anybody else get told to flip their prep pattern and notice a difference?

Actually circles give better coverage on some primers.

...unless you're doing some kind of precision priming for a tiny spot, I don't know if it really matters that much. Like, are you painting a miniature or are you painting a wall? Because my living room ceiling sure didn't care if I did circles or back-and-forth strokes. It looks the same either way to me.
