Dropped $400 on a mid-range paint gun when my $120 one worked better, and I want to know who is wrong here
Last month I spent $400 at my local jobber in Fresno on a name brand HVLP gun because everyone swore I needed to upgrade from my cheap $120 one. Turns out the finish was blotchy and I fought orange peel on a silver Camry for two days, so I went back to the old gun and it laid down clean. Now half the guys at my shop say it is my compressor not the gun, and the other half say I just got a bad needle. So what is the real deal here, is the expensive gun worth it or did I just waste 400 bucks?

The compressor thing is real but it's not about pressure, it's about CFM. A $400 gun usually needs way more air volume than the $120 one, and if your compressor can't keep up the gun starves and sprays uneven. Check the CFM rating on both guns against what your compressor actually puts out at 90 psi. Silver metallic also shows every flaw, so a gun that lays it clean on silver is doing something right.
