Hit 500 cars through my booth on Tuesday and honestly the number changed how I bid
I always quoted paint jobs by gut feel until I added up every car I've sprayed since I opened my bay in 2019 and realized the jobs I lost money on all followed the same pattern, so now I want to know how you guys figure out your break-even point before you even give a customer a number.
Tracked my last 40 jobs in a $2 notebook and found my break-even sits around 6.5 hours per car including prep, anything under that quote and I was basically working for free. Now I just add up materials plus hours times my shop rate before I ever open my mouth with a number.
