I used to swear by cheap block sanders until a Subaru hood in Reno flipped me
Honestly, I always thought a $15 block sander was fine for anybody, but last month I was flattening a long hood on a 2015 Subaru Outback and the flex was killing my straight edges. A buddy let me borrow his Duratec 18-inch block for one pass and the difference was night and day, it held flat no matter how much pressure I put on it. After that one panel, I ordered my own and now I can't go back, the cheap ones just don't cut it for bigger repairs. Anyone else notice how much easier long panels are with a stiffer block, or am I just late to the game?
Feel your pain on those long hoods, they will absolutely punish a flimsy block. I fought the same battle on a truck bed and once I switched to a rigid block the straight edges finally started acting right. Nothing worse than chasing waves you created yourself.
