I was at a shop in Phoenix that swore by using only factory paint, but I think that's a waste of money for most jobs.
They were doing a full respray on a ten year old Civic and insisted on the OEM stuff, which added like $400 to the bill. For a daily driver, a good quality aftermarket paint system from a brand like PPG does the job just fine and saves the customer cash. Anyone else think the factory paint obsession is overkill sometimes?

Honestly, the factory paint thing might be about resale value for that specific shop. They can put "OEM paint only" on the receipt, which looks amazing to a buyer later. For a ten year old Civic though, that's kinda wild. The next owner probably won't care or even know, they'll just see a nice paint job. That shop is selling peace of mind, not just paint, but you're right that it's overkill for a daily.

Well, I actually agree with mason847 on this one. That shop is building their reputation on a detail most customers won't ever check. For a daily driver, a perfect color match and a quality clear coat matter far more than the brand name on the paint can.

Ever had a shop try to upsell you on factory paint for a beater? Mason847 is right, that's just for the receipt to look fancy. For a ten year old daily, a good aftermarket job looks just as good and lasts fine.
