Showerthought: I paid $340 for a "paint matching" app subscription and a colorimeter that my eyes beat every single time
I run the paint side at a shop here in Akron and about 8 months ago I got sold on this idea that I needed a digital colorimeter plus a monthly app subscription to nail tricky metallic blends. So I'm out around $340 for the year between the subscription and the little reader, thinking it was gonna cut my tint time way down. What actually happened is the thing kept spitting out a formula that was close but never dead on for faded panels, and I'd still be standing there with a stir stick and a sprayout card eyeballing the blend anyway. I finally did a test where I mixed by eye first on a silver Camry bumper and then ran the meter on the same panel, and my eye match was the one the customer couldn't spot. The guy who trained me back in the day always said the card tells you the truth and the computer just tells you a guess, and I hate that he was proven correct on my dime. So now the colorimeter sits in a drawer and I'm eating the rest of the subscription because I paid for the whole year up front like a sucker. Anybody here actually getting real value out of a reader on faded or tri-coat jobs, or did I just buy an expensive flashlight?
