A 20 year master tech in Phoenix showed me his scan tool log book and I almost fell over
Stopped by a shop in Phoenix last Tuesday to drop off a core part and got talking to the guy who runs the bay next to mine. He pulled out this old notebook where he writes down every single code he clears, the mileage, and what fixed it, going back to 2004. There were over 3,000 entries in there, all handwritten, and flipping through it he showed me a misfire pattern on a 2011 Silverado that matched a job he did six years earlier. I thought keeping notes on paper died out years ago. Does anybody else still log repairs by hand, or am I the only one who has been missing out on this?
Man, three thousand handwritten entries sounds cool when you're flipping through it but nobody ever asks how long that actually takes. Writing down every code, mileage, and fix after every job is easily a few minutes a pop, and half those old codes probably don't even match what the same truck throws today with updated software. I get the appeal of a paper trail, but six years is a long gap for a misfire pattern to still hold up. Seems more like a neat story than a real system.
