Found out my scan tool's live data was lying about fuel trims for 6 months
So I've been chasing a rough idle on a 2014 F-150 for way too long. Kept seeing negative fuel trims around -12 on my Autel and figured it was a vacuum leak or dirty MAF. Cleaned everything, replaced the PCV valve, no luck. Last week I actually decided to hook up my old analog smoke machine just for fun and found a tiny crack in the intake boot behind the throttle body. After fixing it, I checked the live data again and the trims show 0. But here's the thing, my scan tool was showing them at -12 the whole time even though the actual issue was unmetered air, which should have made it positive. Turns out the freeze frame and live data were from two different PIDs and I never noticed the tool was averaging them weirdly. Has anyone else had a scan tool just give you straight up misleading numbers that wasted a bunch of time?
