Tried a fuel injector cleaner on a high-mileage car, got a nasty surprise in Tulsa

I ran a can of injector cleaner through my 240k mile F-150 last week and it started pinging like crazy. I guess it dislodged 20 years of carbon that went straight into the cylinders or the O2 sensors. Has anyone else had this backfire after using a cleaner on an older engine, or should I just accept the knock and switch back to cheap gas?
