There's this thing people do with everything from music to TV where they swear the early stuff was better, but a lot of the time they just ran into it at the right age. TRL in 1999 hit when you were maybe 12 or 13, and everything felt huge and new. By 2003 you were 16 or 17 and suddenly too cool for the bands you loved two years ago. Same show, same countdown, but you changed. I see this with my little cousins and TikTok now, they'll be saying the 2021 era was peak in like five years. Nostalgia is really just your memory of being young and not knowing any better. The show probably did get a bit worse too once the format got stale, but the aging thing is the bigger piece.
