Wasted $1,100 on a smoke machine before I found the actual vacuum leak
Last month a 2016 F-150 came in with a rough idle and a P0171, and I talked the shop owner into buying a $1,100 smoke machine from the Matco guy in Tulsa because I was sure it was a intake gasket. Turns out the leak was a cracked PCV hose I could have found with a $12 can of carb cleaner and five minutes of listening. I ate the cost on the machine out of my own check and I am still hearing about it from the other guys in the bay. Has anyone actually gotten their money back out of one of those smoke testers or did I just buy the world's most expensive fog machine?
