I figured soldering guns were fine for cannon plugs till a guy at the Amarillo hangar made me redo one
Always grabbed the soldering gun for cannon plug pins because it heats up fast and I was in a rush. Last month I was helping on a King Air in Amarillo and an old timer watched me tin a pin with it. He didn't say much, just handed me his temp controlled iron set to 700 and told me to try again. The difference in the joint was night and day, no cold blob, no scorched insulation, and it passed a pull test first try. I looked it up after and a gun tip swings way past 900 degrees, which is why I kept cooking pins and never knew why. Now the gun stays in the box and the iron comes out even for quick jobs. Anyone got a favorite tip shape for those tiny 22 gauge contacts?
