Just found a cold solder joint that caused weeks of headaches

I spent ages chasing a ghost in the nav system. Turns out it was a single bad solder joint on a board. How do you guys check for these?

Why waste time on complicated checks? A strong lens and good light show most cold joints fast. Chasing ghosts usually means missing the obvious stuff.

Ever try using one of those cheap digital microscopes hooked to a laptop? Saw a video where a tech found hairline cracks that way. The_oliver has a point about good light and a strong lens for the obvious ones, but sometimes you need to zoom way in on those old boards. Doesn't a cold joint usually look kind of dull and crusty, not shiny?

Thought @the_oliver was right but that microscope changed my mind.
