A ranger at Zion told me my route plan was garbage and she was right
I mapped out a 3 day trip through the Narrows and thought I had it nailed down, 14 miles total with a camp at site 9. She looked at it for 10 seconds and asked where I planned to be when the afternoon storms rolled in, and I had zero answer for that. Started building every route around water sources and escape points first now, anyone else plan around bailout spots before mileage?
Planning around bailouts first makes sense in canyon country where a storm can turn a wash into a trap, but I'd argue mileage still matters just as much since a shorter route keeps you closer to those exits. On something like the Narrows the real call is knowing the flow level and having a turn-around time, not just marking spots on a map. Routes with no way out are where people get hurt, so I get your point, but you still have to do the math on how far you can actually move.
