Chose the Pinhoti over the AT this spring, no regrets yet
I had two weeks off in April and kept going back and forth between the AT in Virginia or the Pinhoti Trail in Alabama. Picked the Pinhoti mainly because I wanted less crowd and more solitude, figured I could handle the rougher footbed. Hit the trailhead near Cheaha State Park on day one, and by day three my feet were already wrecked from the rocks and roots. Still, I saw maybe six people in 80 miles versus the constant chatter I remember from the AT, so it felt worth the pain. Has anyone else swapped a famous trail for a quieter one and found it changed how they look at route planning?

That footbed comment hits hard. I did the Ouachita Trail in Arkansas one fall instead of the Smokeys and my ankles were on fire for a week, but the silence was so loud it almost felt wrong at first. Did the lack of other hikers mess with your head at night, or was it more of a relief than you expected? I found myself reading every footprint and piece of trash like it was a message from another world, which was oddly comforting. Curious if you came out of it with a new rule for yourself about how many people you need around to feel safe or if you just embraced the empty miles.
