DAE cut their daily miles by a third on the second day and actually finish the trip now?
Two summers back I did the Timberline Trail in Oregon with a plan of 12 miles a day and blew up my knee by mile 18 on day one, and we had to bail at Ramona Falls. Last month I tried something different on a 4 day loop in the Wallowas: I planned day two as a short 7 mile hop and stacked the big climbs on days one and three. It felt wrong on paper (like I was wasting daylight), but I finished with legs left and actually enjoyed the last morning instead of limping out. So is the smart move to front-load or to build in one easy day? I want to hear from folks who plan routes around a short day on purpose.
