Guy at the REI in Boise told me to flip my map upside down before planning any loop, and now my routes make way more sense
I was standing in the trail section at the Boise REI two Saturdays ago picking up a Sawyer squeeze and complaining to this employee about how my loop routes always feel harder than the mileage says. He grabbed the topo I was holding, turned it 180 degrees, and said most people plan downhill sections as the finish when they should be the start. I tried it on a 22 mile loop in the Sawtooths and suddenly the big climb hit me fresh instead of at mile 18 with dead legs. It sounds dumb but just rotating the map made me see the elevation profile totally different. Does anyone else plan their loops this way, or am I the only one who never thought to do it?
