Warning: a guy at the REI in Boise talked me out of the Sawtooths and he was right
Last month I had a 3 night loop planned in the Sawtooths and a guy named Dale at the Boise REI map counter asked why I was heading there in late June with a 20 degree bag. I pushed back hard, since everyone online says June is fine up there, but he pulled out the snow depth report and it showed 4 feet still sitting at 8,000 feet. We rerouted to the Owyhee canyons instead and it was the best trip I've done in 5 years, so now I'm wondering how many other popular routes I've been doing on pure groupthink. Has anyone else had a ranger or gear desk person steer them off a hyped trail and onto something better?
