Warning: that shortcut through the ridge almost got us stranded near Moab

A guy at the trailhead in Moab told us to skip the switchbacks and follow the dry creek bed to save 4 miles, and it looked fine on the map at first. About halfway through, the creek bed turned into a 10 foot drop with loose sandstone on both sides, and we had to backtrack in the dark with one headlamp between us. Has anyone else taken a local's shortcut that turned out to be a total trap, or am I just the only one dumb enough to trust a stranger with a dog named Biscuit?

Trusting Biscuit's human was my first mistake, second was not packing a backup headlamp.
